Well, it's that time of the new season...the 10x10 challenge. I've participated in the 10x10 challenge with Lee from the Style Bee and Caroline from Un-fancy (as well as the numerous gals from this vibrant community) in the fall and I'm very excited to be diving into this exercise again!
I call it an exercise because while the concept is like "Capsule Closet for Dummies," the most encouraging part is that it's ok to make your own rules and learn from the experience. So what is this all about, you ask? Well, it's simple. 10 pieces of clothing. 10 outfits. 10 days. That's it!
You can learn some of the more nitty gritty of the challenge from the Style Bee! I've selected my 10 pieces and thrilled to simplify by morning routine with some forethought outfits over the next two weeks. I'll only be doing the challenge during the work week as I tend to live a little more wild in my wardrobe over the weekend (i.e. sweats for boxing class and a dress for Sunday morning). So follow along and I hope you'll be encouraged to join in next time!
FORECAST: It is most certainly winter here in Minnesota. We have weather ranging anywhere from lows in the negatives to highs of just over 40. Try to manage that when planning a wardrobe! As we have a forecasted snowfall tomorrow through Monday, I wanted to focus on some cozier pieces that will still be office appropriate.
STYLE: As I mentioned above, I'm only doing the challenge during the work week. My wardrobe is too desperate to meld my office wear with my weekend wear so I'll keep the challenge business-focused.
After discovering new conscious closet enthusiasts from past 10x10 Challenges, I also have found there to be a lack of traditional office wear participants. Hoping to fill that void and help someone else discover a new way to unlock the possibilities of their closet!
ITEMS: Sticking to a helpful formula, I picked out
- 2 bottoms
- 3 tops
- 2 layering pieces
- 1 dress
- 2 shoes (of different heel height!)
I stuck to a neutral color theme to make mixing easier but plan to add some interest with accessories.
1. SLIM WOOL PANTS | J. Crew from 2013 (similar) | Size 10
Usually, the first thing I do when planning for the week ahead is to check the weather. The forecast for even the next week ranges from the teens and snow to a high of 43. I'm playing it safe with some 3 season wool to keep cozy when needed, but not to overdo the chilly winter layers.
2. SWEATER BLAZER | J. Crew | Size M
I love how a blazer can easily take a slouchy outfit and make it polished! I have been a long time blazer fan but a more recent sweater-blazer fan because it is still a wildly comfortable item but adds some intentionality to your look.
3. STRIPED TEE | Everlane | Size L
Anybody else on the eternal hunt for the perfect striped tee? Well, my long journey had led me here. This little number hits almost all of my checkboxes...but the sleeves are a little loose. C'est la vie, it's still necessary to have that French-girl stripe in any wardrobe!
4. DARK SKINNY DENIM | Madewell | Size Tall 30
I usually don't wear denim to work besides Fridays but I'm looking forward to creating some work-appropriate denim looks with a blazer and polished look. And these blue jean babies take the cake. I know Madewell has a cult following and there is a reason why...
5. WHITE CREW SWEATER | J. Crew Factory from 2016 (similar from Everlane) | Size L
When thinking of pieces that will mix and match well, I want duel functioning items. A slim sweater is where it's at because you can wear it as the base layer or over another collared shirt, etc. Simple and functional!
6. FITTED BLACK SHEATH | H&M from 2013 (similar) | Size M
Simple black dress - need I say more? Well, this little number has come in handy and can masterfully transform from a simple jersey dress to just about any occasion. Perfect for a wardrobe on the go.
7. BLACK BOYFRIEND BLAZER | Madewell from 2015 (Similar from Everlane) | Size 10
Once again, an oversized blazer can work wonders to your look. I've spiced mine up with a tonal black pin for interest!
8. OXFORD BOYFRIEND SHIRT | Madewell from 2015 (similar from Everlane) | Size M
Ahhh, the perfect blue shirt. Rocking that borrowed-from-the-boys slash Parisian chic, you really cannot go wrong with a crisp blue top! I find that this style looks good on just about every complexion and makes your features POP! What more could you ask for?
9. OXFORD CHELSEA BOOTS | Franco Sarto via Marshalls from 2010 (similar from Everlane) | Size 10
Ok, these little cuties have brought me many miles. I love that you can wear with pants or even dresses and skirts! The extra oxford tip detailing makes these so fun and I'm happy the soles are still holding up (barely...).
10. BROWN HEELED BOOTIES | Madewell from 2015 (similar) | Size 10
The perfect heel height. While disguised as a fashionable heeled bootie, these puppies can still be comfortable after a whole day of walking. I've taken them on multiple trips and find them to be a perfect balance between function and fashion.
So, that's it folks! I'm all ready for the couple weeks ahead and looking forward to showing you a recap of Week 1 in next week's post. Stay tuned with the challenge via Instagram.

Isn't elegance forgetting what one is wearing?
