After following Lee Vosbugh from The Style Bee and Caroline from Un-fancy, I finally decided to jump on the style challenge to take 10 pieces from your closet and style them 10 different ways for 10 days. I had half-heartedly tried for the spring challenge but didn't have accountability to stick to it and quickly went back to the other options in my closet. I'm so excited to be exploring this new realm with you!
Setting the Scene
A little personal background for this challenge -- throughout college and shortly after, I worked at J.Crew retail store on the visual merchandising team. Surrounded by rich textures, luxurious wovens, bright colors and oodles of endless sparkles, it was difficult to resist the allure of consumerism. I stayed true to my thrifty background and would wait for a good deal but my closet quickly filled with trendy and timeless pieces, sending me into an over-crowded mental state of style. There were almost too many choices to make getting ready a breeze.
Once I joined the 9-to-5 working world, I put many of the pieces I accumulated into good use but started to thin out my wardrobe from the sequined, embellished, bold-patterned and lively colors of my past. Attracted to the classics of old-school J.Crew and inspired by the timeless style of every Parisian woman, I sought to discover my personal style with rich neutrals and flattering shapes. Now that I have grown comfortable with my closet staples, enter the style challenge...
Jumping on the bandwagon, I wanted to first and foremost be accountable to sticking with the numerous options I have neatly arranged in my closet. Consumerism has become a big topic in the slow fashion movement. There are many persuasive reasons for why the developed world needs to curb the constant ingesting of trends through clothes, shoes and accessories (i.e. fair worker's environment and pay, textile landfill, etc.); however, my biggest reason for intentionally engaging my closet habits is to refocus my heart and finances by being a good steward over what I have been given. Amidst the world of social updates, it can be challenging to ask yourself, "is this really needed?" yet when we assess our belongings, we often have far more than ever needed! I want to hold myself accountable on this platform and hopefully inspire someone else to take a leap of faith in living the simple life. Simple and full.
The 10 Pieces
After a little context, let's dig in to the challenge. 10 pieces, 10 days. I thought through the next two weeks (taking a break over the weekends) as though I would be living out of a suitcase -- because for some reason, I can always pack well but have found the 10x10 challenge to be a little tricky.
We have started to get the first nip of fall weather in Minnesota with some drizzle and sunshine, so weather demanded for some cozy layers but still taking a cue from the cheery fall colors and autumn activities. Working in an office environment with a couple various after-work obligations, I needed to remain professional but comfortable. I finally settled on some great basics and even worked some bold color into the mix!
What to Expect
So there we have it, folks. I'm actually excited and looking forward to seeing how many different ways I can mix and match these pieces. Nothing seems too out of the ordinary but I'm looking forward to seeing if any exciting sartorial discoveries are made!
I'll be wearing these 10 pieces for the next two work weeks. I'll see if I can snap a photo here or there but I'll plan to do a recap of both weeks over the weekend. Thanks for joining me on this adventure!
